The Alexandria Ward Chapel is one of very fond memories growing up. My grandfather was Bishop Horace Crowther. I am the daughter of Horace's son Kent H. Crowther. I am the youngest of 4 children; Mike Crowther, Jerry Crowther, Alene Crowther, and me (Erika Crowther). On this web page their was mention of Kitty Clayton , her husband was who did the plumbing for the chapel but he also did most of the plumbing and heating/air conditioning for all Fairfax County Schools. My Mom, Artel Crowther passed down to me one of the recipe books that was sold to raise money for the ward. The chapel had some of the uniquest features of the times, for example there was a balcony enclosed with glass above the chapel which was considered the "quiet room" for young children and parents to sit and not disturb the congregation. Also the amazing wall that would retract on the right side of the chapel so that it was an overflow area for more seating that went into the gymnasium that had beautiful wood floors. The chandeliers in the chapel were beautiful and gave an element of reverence but also elegance. Back in the day we went to Sunday school on Sunday mornings and then went back in the afternoon for the main Sacrament Service. Then on Wednesday's we had church in the evening for children and teenagers (Primary) and the Boy Scouts would also meet at that time. (I might be wrong of which day of the week). We would between services on Sunday go across the street to a nursing home for community service hours and take the patrons to a church service that we participated in. There are so many memories of dinners and community projects and everything revolved around the Alexandria Chapel. I am so blessed that my childhood memories and teachings were spent at that Chapel and that my family was a big part of the history of the success of that Chapel. It is wonderful to know that it has been 75 years to celebrate. The Lord definitely blesses us greatly. ~~ Dr. Erika Crowther Mason (who lives in Midlothian, VA close to Richmond.)
